Roughly 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Police state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then discovered many other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state early analysis show the fluid was probably human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; authorities are not yet informed of any injuries in association with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.
An important representative said the incident left him speechless and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on residents of migrant background in February 2020.
